불안정한 꿈 속에서,
난 자갈이 깔린 좁은 길을 홀로 걸었다네.
가로등 불빛 아래에서, 난 오싹함을 느끼며 옷깃을 세웠는데.
그 때 네온불빛이 나의 눈을 찌를 듯이 덮쳐오더군.
그 빛은 밤을 가른 채로
침묵의 소리와 부딪혔지.

People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,

Disturb the sound of silence.

눈부시기 그지 없는 불빛 속에서,
만명, 혹은 그보다 더 많은 사람을 보았네.
그들은 건성으로 이야기를 하고
그들은 건성으로 남의 말을 듣고
정말 감동을 나누지도 못할 노래나 만들어대고.
감히 그 침묵의 소리에 맞서는 사람은 아무도 없었네.

Silence like a cancer grows.

But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

'멍청이 자식들!
"그대는 암처럼 무서운 침묵이 자라는 것도 모르지.
내 말을 듣고, 내 손을 잡으란 말이야." 라고 말했지.
그러나 내 말은 소리없는 빗방울처럼 그저 흘러내려
침묵의 샘가에서 메아리 칠 뿐이었지.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls

And whispered in the sounds of silence.

사람들은 제멋대로 만들어 낸
네온으로 된 신에게 절하고, 기도하네.
그러자, 그 네온으로 된 글들이
사람들에게 경고를 하고있네.
"예언자의 말은 지하철 벽이나
아파트의 구석진 곳에 숨어있을 뿐..'이라고.
침묵의 소리속에서 그런 속삭임이 들려오네.
